SIFU – a Hong Kong inspired Dining Room

This is a Foodie Fridays – TGIF! It’s time to get fat on Fridays! entry under my themed blog posts! For more info about this Singapore Food themed blog posts, do read the entry here.

[Invited Food Tasting]

BFF and I visited SIFU recently courtesy of a food tasting invitation from Huntington and SIFU. I’ve heard BFF raving about the food in Hong Kong plenty of times and needless to say, I was extremely intrigued by SIFU.

Personally, I have yet to visit Hong Kong, was only in their airport for a transit flight to Korea. Perhaps in future! Have been meaning to visit Hong Kong Disneyland.

SIFU is conveniently located at Bugis Junction. I love the decor! I’ve been checking out places with lovely decor for inspiration for #nadskaihome!

Anyway, back to the main topic.

About SIFU

SIFU is a Hong Kong inspired dining room which features their very own take on Hong Kong style items. Most of the items are fusion dishes. East meets West and Hong Kong meets Local flavours inspired items. The name SIFU actually is a reference to “master” or “teacher” in Cantonese. All dishes are handmade by the chefs and bakers by scratch!

Apparently I’m Cantonese but I do not know anything about my half-heritage. Oops. We sampled a few of their dishes and here’s my 2 cents about some of them.

Handmade Pillow Buns

These handmade buns comes in 4 different fillings: Char Siew, Sweet Custard, Zuki and Yuzu Cheese. Personally I prefer the Char Siew over the sweet variations. You may notice in the picture above that there is this ‘air pocket cavity’ above the char siew filling. It is actually SIFU’s technique of a pillowy soft bun. Buns retail at $1.20 per piece.

Crispy Prawn Toast

The Crispy Prawn Toast ($8.80 per serving) had a minced prawn paste on top of a crispy bread which was deep fried. I did find that the toast was a tad oily for my liking however it was very delicious.

Caramelised Roasted Ribs

I found it adorable that SIFU took a different take on a typical Western dish. Instead of a full slab of ribs, SIFU serves by rib. Personally I really enjoyed the rich caramelised taste. I usually do not order ribs elsewhere as it can get rather too jelak for me however, I liked the option of ordering per ribs here. The ribs are a tad costly in my opinion. At $3.90 per rib, a full slab would burn a hole in my pocket.

Pulled Pork Ribs Chinese-style Slider

This reminded me so much of a Kong Bak Pau. Instead of the usual fatty pork, SIFU uses caramelised roasted pulled pork with crunch greens in the traditional Chinese Lotus Leaf Bun. Sliders are at $4.80 each.

Signature Roasted Chicken Thigh and Shrimp Dumpling Soup Noodles

At $10.80 a bowl, this dish is easily the most value for money dish in SIFU. Instead of the usual egg noodles, SIFU uses a special type of beehoon (apparently a hybrid between vermicelli and local beehoon) in a hearty rich soup accompanied with a juicy huge chicken thigh and fat shrimp dumplings. Personally I felt that the soup was a tad too salty. However I did a quick check with my dining companions and they found that it wasn’t salty to them. So it could just be my preference! Are the Cantonese more inclined to saltier food?

Pork Chop Dry Noodles

Another extremely value for money dish. At $9.80, you get a very generous pork chop with almost never ending thin, stringy traditional Hong Kong egg noodles. Highly recommended to share. BFF and I were struggling to finish this dish!

Beef Stew Rice

Easily one of favourite dishes, the Beef Stew Rice is served with a bowl of rice topped with a quail egg and a lovely medley of beef, carrots and radish stew. The beef is cooked for over 6 hours and the results are amazing. Tender and juicy meat accompanied with rich thick gravy at only $10.80.

Milk Pudding

Last but definitely not least, we tried the popular dessert from Macau. Honestly, at first, I was pretty sure that I would not like this dish. (normally am not a huge fan of jelly, pudding and anything else of that texture). Even BFF was shocked that I enjoyed this dish so much. The Milk Pudding is served with a fine ‘sawdust’ topping which was actually finely crushed biscuits. It was a light and not overpoweringly sweet dessert to end a great meal. At only $5.80 for a jar, I was extremely tempted to dapao one for breakfast the next day.

Do check out SIFU. I know I’ll be back this week for their Milk Pudding 😉
