This was how I spent my Sunday…

Spent some time with my good friends.

First up!

Outfit of the day: White frilly tanktop from Bangkok, belt and pink shorts from TheBlogShop and jellies (not seen in this pic) from Novo.

Had lunch with my ex-colleagues from Grayling. Missed them so much! Kenny treated us to lunch at Ma Maison. We were supposed to have lunch at Food for Thought originally but it was closed. Oops.

Stuff we ordered.

Gratin was really yummy. Not too jelak!

The set lunch was really delish. Consisted of a hamburger steak, pasta and omu rice! Shiokkers!

The beef stroganoff rice was so-so. The omu rice with the set lunch was tastier actually. Trhe beef was a bit too tough for my liking.

Surprisingly the Seafood Paella wasn’t very yummy. I remember the last time I went to Ma Maison with Jaywalk, it was really good!

Way too much food for the 4 of us!

After that, I met Jacelyn for a movie. We then went Sakae Sushi for dinner because I was craving for the Kani Chawanmushi!

The usual stuff I always order:

Salmon sushi

Hot green tea.

Fried tofu.

Cha soba.

Kani chawanmushi. <3

Kani tempura…

Jacelyn is very adventurous to me. LOL. I always order the same old same old! She ordered the Tempura cheese and Mango Salmon

After dinner, us gluttons went to A dessert story for well… desserts!

I was very disappointed when Slice at FEP closed down but thankfully managed to find Desert Story! I love shaved ice. Damn shiok to eat! Beats ice kachang hands down imho.

Yes, this creature of habit ordered Mango. I ALWAYS order Mango. LOL. (random: i love how chio my blackberry looks here. *flips hair*. Am wondering what skin I should use next, any recommendations?)

She ordered the Mocha.

This concluded my very gluttony Sunday. Ate ate ate nonstop! Need to exercise more instead! Next Sunday! Stanchart 10km run!

Sakae Sushi’s latest items!

Went Sakae Sushi recently and found out that they have launched a few new items! Are you a fan of Japanese food?

Surprisingly I enjoyed the Soft Shell Crab Salad. Why do I say surprisingly? That’s because I usually do not enjoy Soft Shell Crab. Find it a bit weird tasting. I guess coupled with the salad, it tasted well! I know ching chong boy would love this!

This crane lookalike item (Ebi Arare) was a crunchy delight! It’s actually covered by rice crackers instead of your usual roe, seaweed etc. I scrapped off most of the sauce though as it was a bit overwhelming for me.

The Mushroom Kimochi Tofu was weird to me. The sauce was tangy but it gave a “siap siap” feeling. I like my normal agedashi tofu thankewverymuch.

The Maguro Carpaccio was really yummy and it was one of my favourite items. The thinly sliced tuna was dressed with a special sauce which was neither too creamy nor too jelak. It was the right amount of sauce.

My comments for each individual sushi:

The Salmon Mayo Mentai Inari was not my thing. I for one, do not like items with too much sauce. This one had a lot of sauce! Way too creamy and jelak!

The Aburi Salmon  Teriyaki was simple. Nothing spectacular but you can’t go wrong with it.

Honestly the Unagi Shitake Gunkan was more shitake than unagi. I hardly tasted the unagi! Despite that, it was really tasty!

The Hotate Mentai  Maki was good. Obviously I scrapped off most of the sauce. I’m in love with the hotate dishes here! The Hotate Sushi was also good but tastewise, I prefer the Mentai Maki.

The Unagi Cracker Maki was similiar to the Hotate Mentai Maki just that it was unagi (like duh?). Thumbs up!

And my favourite item was the Sakae Candle! As you can see from the above picture, it was lighted up! Really cute and I thought Sakae Sushi was clever to have thought of that. Will we see birthday parties in Sakae Sushi now?

I miss those days. Rushing for theory classes and pool sessions.

Some pictures taken a few weeks ago.

Met up with David for dinner at Sakae Sushi.

Look at the amount of food we ordered! I feel that my taste buds have changed really a lot. I used to never take salmon sushi or chawanmushi or even cha soba but now i can’t enough of it!

And I really enjoy the small plates as I always prefer variety. The more dishes the merrier!

And after dinner, I met Fidel to rush off to pool session. We always had to cab as the school is up on a hill and is a tad inconvenient to travel for us!

I know I’m supposed to blog about my diving trip soon. Oops! Shall wait till I get my card in my hand first! Am itching for leisure and advanced open water dives soon.

Anyone here dives too?

For those who know me.. I never did like eating wasabi. In fact I totally hated the taste of wasabi. My ex, Tiger would love to guzzle lots of wasabi and I would be shaking my head at him.

Now, ching chong boy shakes his head at me. T_T

The first thing we all did upon touching down in Tokyo was to look for food. We found this sushi place in Shinjuku, not too far from where were staying.

It’s a nice place to catch a quick meal and the prices are rather reasonable. Customers ranges from students to office workers to tourists like us!

One more thing  I love about Japan is that maguro is available everywhere and it is as popular as salmon! (unlike in SG where the prefer sashimi = salmon)

The wasabi is actually in the sushi itself! In between of the rice and maguro! So, the first time I ate one, I was shocked by the wasabi taste inside. After that, I started scrapping off the wasabi but obviously there was still a hint of wasabi.

After countless times of scrapping wasabi, I got tired of it and decided to eat it with the wasabi inside. Slowly got used to it and I love it now!

So yeah, wasabi is love! Here are 2 of my wasabi quotes that I wrote previously.

Wasabi is like love. Even if it brings you to tears, you just hunger more for it.

I love wasabi. i love that brief instance where it hits you, leaves you breathless and brings tears to your eyes.

Being an avid user of social media, needless to say I’m always surfing blogs, twitter, plurk, forums and other social media tools. There’s where I would usually looking for good places to eat and all.

When I first saw a few tweets on this place called Standing Sushi Bar, I was a bit intrigued. Friends who know me would know that my 2 favourite foods would have to be sashimi and steak.

This owner of Standing Sushi Bar was answering queries, making conversation, talking about his food all on Twitter! This was one of the few places I knew who would do so.

I decided to give it a test by making reservations on Twitter and made arrangements to go.

The whole concept of Standing Sushi Bar is basically to stand and eat but being lazy people, Gracey and I chose to sit. (Chairs are only provided during dinner time.)

We ordered an assortment of sashimi, sushi and some other snacks and it was really yummy!

Howard, the owner of Standing Sushi Bar kept plying Gracey and I mad amounts of sake.

Had way too many.

Howard and Chef Roy smiled gamely for my camera.

I am no food blogger or food connoisseur but I do think that Standing Sushi Bar serves really fresh sashimi. Food is good, service is good however… the food might be a bit expensive for those on a budget compared to other sushi joints.

In which case, I would advice you to try omakase.

Omakase (????) is a Japanese phrase that means “It’s up to you” (from Japanese ??, entrust).

The expression is used at sushi restaurants to leave the selection to the chef. It differs from ordering à la carte. The chef will generally present a series of plates, beginning with the lightest fare and proceeding to heaviest, richest dishes. The phrase is not exclusive to service of raw fish with rice, and can incorporate grilling and simmering as well. Customers ordering omakase style expect the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes, and the meal can be likened to an artistic performance by the chef. Ordering omakase can be a gamble; however, the customer typically receives the highest quality fish the restaurant currently has in stock at a price cheaper than if it was ordered à la carte. From the restaurant’s perspective, a large number of customers ordering omakase can help in planning for food costs.

Howard told us about the concept of omakase and Gracey and I decided to come back together with her friend Celeste and my friend David to try the omakase.

We waited in anticipation (and a bit of fear). We had set a budget of $70/pax (you have to set a budget, it goes at a minimum of $50/pax) and we were really excited about the food.

The food soon arrived.

1st course: Sliced beef.

I found this really yummy and tasty. A nice appetiser.

2nd course: Salmon, the soft bone bits.

I’m not a big fan of salmon and honestly this dish didn’t do it for me. However, I gamely ate more than half of it.

3rd course: Assorted sashimi

Needless to say, this was our favourite course. There was even scallop! Really yummy and really good!

4th course: hamachi.

Usually I’m not a big fan of fish but this dish was really delish. There was no strong fishy aftertaste (which I really detest). Much nicer than salmon imho.

5th course: oysters.

If I remembered correctly, there was a cheesy sauce on it. Interesting dish!

6th course: Seafood + brinjal

Extremely sinful but extremely yummy! The sauce on this dish was really tasty! Wonder if I get the recipe from Chef Roy… hmmm

Miso Soup was served after the 6th course and I mistook it as the 7th course. Oops.

7th course: assorted sushi

I think it was salmon, scallop and unagi. Reallly goood! Check out the huge unagi piece!

8th course: Icecream

The final course was a scoop of delish black sesame icecream. Totally hit the spot!

We really enjoyed ourselves and I returned for another omakase trip with some other blogger friends the week after. In fact, I’m heading back tomorrow! Go for the omakase, I’m absolutely hooked to it. Great value for money! ;)
