Wedding Dinner

This is a Monday's Musings - Random thoughts, feelings and musings by Yours Truly entry under my themed blog posts! For more info about the themed blog posts, do read the entry here

I think most of my Monday's Musings entries comes from real life experiences. When irked, amused, I think it makes good content for Monday's boliaoness posts. These are all true experiences where I faced during dating then engagement till marriage life.

Before Marriage.

1. When are you guys getting married ah?

I'm sure many of you guys face this question, especially during Chinese New Year. If your partner has yet to propose, this will be an extremely awkward moment. I myself have made this mistake many times. Oops.

2. Have you applied for a BTO?

There's a saying that there is no romance in Singapore. Nowadays couples apply for a BTO before getting engaged. Declaring that you have applied for a BTO is as good as saying "Yes, we're getting married." I remember reading this on a t-shirt "Would you BTO me?" Hurhur.

After the proposal.

3. How big is the ring? How much did he spent on it?

Seriously, I had this question posed to me. Why are you comparing my ring? It feels like that person just wanted to 1-up us. Bo liao. Compete for what? Wanna compete if your balls bigger than my husband's?

When planning for your wedding dinner.

I've written about this before in my wedding pet peeves but I'll summarise and add it in here too!

4. How much is per table ah?

WTF. You do not ask a couple that. It's like a loaded question. Give whatever you wanna give la. And can't you Google? Please don't tell me you wanna know cos you wanna gauge how much to give for the angbao. KNN!

5. Can I bring a +1?

If I answered no and you persist on bringing a +1, then why bother asking me? You "forgot" ah? You good.

After the wedding dinner.

6. How much was the wedding ah? How much did you lose?

I find this extremely irritating. If you are not looking at the extent of what I did for my wedding then it shouldn't affect you. I don't know some people (mainly the unmarried ones) thinks that wedding = profits. Honey, that's the wrong mindset. And seriously, some people are so el cheapo. Don't do wedding dinner lah if you have that kind of mindset!

7. When are you gonna have kids?

How about, when are you gonna shut the mother father up? I wrote about this in my last Monday's Musings post.

8. Why bother having a wedding dinner?

Because we have our reasons and it's a choice? Showing disdain over our choice of having a traditional banquet is silly. Not everyone is like you. We don't show disdain over your choice of partners, do we? Personally, yes, a traditional banquet would have never crossed my mind in the first place, but I loved planning for it and I loved how it turned out. I don't regret at all having a wedding dinner and it was a great experience for me. It's not my fault if you didn't enjoy planning yours. If you choose to elope or have a BBQ for your wedding, by all means. That ain't our style.

9. Why "this", Why "that"?

For example, why the choice of your BTO's location, Punggol so mother father far! Why Punggol? Why you choose to host your ROM there? Singapore Flyer so ex! Why did you have 47 tables for your wedding? Why Orchard Hotel? why the venue? Why did you have a candy table? Why did you have a Photo Booth? why the setting of your engagement ring? Why a half infinity ring for your wedding band? Why your ring don't match with Skai? Why are you going to Maldives? Not ex meh? Why do you go for Singapore staycations often? How much do you spend a year on staycations? Why did you buy a Chanel bag? Not expensive meh? Why did you choose that design for your MCM bag? How much was it? why why why mother father why why why?! Because we like it lah. Can? Wah lao eh. Lao niang buay tahan lah!

7

These are some of the irritating things that people have asked Skai aka c(hubby) and I. SO DAMN IRRITATING!!!!!!!!! What have you faced personally? Do comment in this entry! Also, what other things you've heard that you think should be on this list? Please feel free to comment!

As mentioned in my previous post, here is my final photolog of #nadskai1314!

Continuing from the previous post… We snuck away for a quick outfit change after the second course.

Usually what happens is that the couples would have a rather tight time changing outfits and a quick touch up. Makeup and hair, that is.

The morning gatecrash video will be showed at this time while the bride and groom get ready outside of the ballroom for their march in. At this time, none of us had seen the video. We peeked in and watched the video too. :p

Skai & Nadia - Wedding Highlights from The Wedding Paparazzi on Vimeo.

Gotta love the expressions captured by our photographers!

Ignore the ass. We swopped places here as we thought to show each "side" our "side".

Although this was a blur pic, I really like this! Shows how colourful our wedding was!

We were then invited up on stage for the champagne toast.

Pointing to where the cork should "hit".

Why can't I be more glamourous at my wedding? #unglamnad

We then invited our families, the brothers, sisters and close friends up on stage for the toast.

Naughty Herbert asked us to kiss till the final YAMSENG was completed. And boy, was it a long one. The Yamseng that is.

And oh boy, the time to say our speech.

We didn't prepare ANYTHING at all. Totally winged it. I remembered saying something wrong 😡 About my parents always supportive of all of my boyfriendS. Oops. I rectified it immediately by saying of only him. :p

I'll be posting the table to table pics on Facebook but here are two of my favourite ones! Mainly cos it was two of our biggest group of friends!

The barflies.

The biker gang.

In a blink of an eye, the wedding was over. Together with our families, we shook hands with our guests and exchanged pictures & hugs.

Thanks everyone who spared the time to attend our little celebration!

And now… time to spam the honeymoon pics! If anyone needs tips on planning your wedding, let me know!

Remember I blogged about the pre-dinner activities? Here's the photolog of the wedding dinner!

I asked my friends Herbert and PeiPei to be my hosts for our wedding. Our guests totally raved about them! <3 Best hosts ever! I have had a few queries about both of them! Quote 'nadnut sent me' and email bertliu@hotmail.com if you'll like to engage Herbert and he'll quote you a better price! (Not sponsored wor! He's my polymate!)

Some pictures of our decor before we made our grand entrance!

Lovely Groom and Bride signs with Tiffany chairs by the kind folks at Mirage Flowers. Spy the colourful balloons behind? Isn't it so "UP"?

I love our backdrop! I have never seen anything like this for a hotel wedding! Love the fairy lights with the soft fabric, colourful pinwheels and poms! Mirage Flowers really delivered as promised! They suggested this design after a discussion with me alongside some research on me, my blog and my likes. LOVE IT!

Instead of something huge for the VIP table, they kept it simple with lovely flowers in pastel colours! I had also bought wands which the brothers helped to put at every table along the aisle!

Not only did Mirage Flowers bring in the green grass carpet, they also sprinkle rose pedals. I didn't know that it was in the design of S + N! LOL!

Our lovely whimsical wonderland (garden + UP concept) decor!

The gorgeous floral arch inside the ballroom also proposed by Mirage Flowers!

Wedding favours with napkins folded two ways by the hotel.

I felt like such a klutz marching in. Kept stepping on my gown, as you can see from the pic above. By right, we're supposed to step kick step kick step kick. Kicking as in kick the gown. But yours truly kept stumbling. BAH!

The wands are such a hit with the crowd! Am thinking of bringing this in to sell!

After our march in, we went up on stage to cut the cake.

And dinner could finally commence.

After the first two courses… we sneaked away when nobody was watching...

While our guests enjoyed themselves catching up with friends and family...

Look out for the final post soon!!! (Actually I wanted to make this my final entry but it was too image intensive. My apologies!)

I had a darker smokey eye look instead for dinner. I loved Cindy man! She gave me two extremely different looks for the day, a light natural pinkish look for the morning and a smokey eye look for dinner.

Love the candy table done up by the kind folks from I Love Candy Buffet. Told them I wanted a colourful candy table and they delivered! So sad that I didn't get a chance to try anything :( Was too busy! But friends told me that everything was yummy!

IM.Perfection provided us with the Giant K <3 N and LOVE props. We had actually wanted to use a roadsign too but unfortunately, some of the letters were unusable before the wedding and we agreed to skip it. It was very pretty though! Highly recommended to book it! Another hiccup that happened was right before the dinner, for some reason, the LOVE lights couldn't work, not sure if it was an electricity or bulb issue. We decided to wing it and just left a bright spotlight on it. I still think it looks amazingly pretty!

Before the wedding.

1. Bad followup service.

Sales guy left apparently. No one followed up with my emails despite me e-mailing to said guy AND the catering email. Shouldn't the person leaving the account handover to someone else first? Email sent on 14th June and in July to Catering Group list was not replied. After emailing their director of events, FINALLY someone contacted me on 19th of August, a good two months where my emails was not replied at all.

2. Themes can only be confirmed 1 month before the wedding.

I was told that "Usually the selection of themes, wedding favours, table dressing and seat covers will be done about a month prior to your wedding". When prodded to check what are the themes that I can choose from, they couldn't confirm. Personally, I wanted to customise more details, bring in handmade stuff and make it look more "my style" and have a more thematic experience but they said it can only be confirmed a month before as it might be changed.

A quick check with other brides showed that Orchard Hotel was 'special' in this case. Most hotels would have 3 themes to choose from.

When pressed, the hotel showed some themes despite saying nothing was confirmed umpteenth times. After meeting the florist and talking to the coordinator Oliver, I decided that I do not have any confidence in Orchard Hotel's florist and decided to do away with their whole package and bring in my own florist Mirage Flowers.

But seriously, do hotels only allow confirmation 1 month before? During the wedding show, they showed me 3 themes, i find it puzzling why would they say that.

3. Tone of messages

I had a few correspondences with the coordinator where I felt the tone was a bit accusing. I showed to my male colleagues and bridesmaids and they thought the same. However I'll have to say, after I pointed this out, he immediately clarified and apologised.

The actual day.

4. Keycard MIAed for 30 minutes.

I had stayed over at my hotel the night before the wedding. Instead of having the gatecrash at my place, we decided to have it at the hotel bridal suite instead. Orchard Hotel (incase anyone asks, no i am not sponsored nor given any perks or any discounts. They have given me headaches only) had given me a day's stay at the bridal suite as part of our wedding package. However as check in was only at 2pm on 1st March and I had wanted to have the tea ceremony in the morning + gatecrash, they couldn't guarantee us an early check in. Which we understood. I was asked to pay for an extra half a day's stay if I had wanted the room at 7am. Which I was fine with it.

While I stayed over the night before, I had stayed in a superior room with my bridesmaids Fidelis and Jacelyn. Blah blah, stayed overnight, had dinner, chit chatted. Confirmed arrangements with the hotel that the keycard will be sent up to my room at 7am. MUA will need to start on makeup  at 7.30am sharp.

Woke up bright and early. Prepared etc. 7am came, no key card. Called front office. Said they needed to check. Staff came up, refused to give key card. Called again. Staff came up, checked bridal suite, walked around. Not giving us key card.

After multiple calls and clarifications, key card was only given at 7.30am. By then my mua, my bridesmaids and I was waiting for them for the longest time. Lack of communication maybe? But I had already checked in, room was under my name, MY belongings was placed in the room the night before. And yet this happened.

That was just the first screw up on the actual day.

5. Rude staff at front office

Poor Elaine had to deal with rude service when she was asking to go up to the bridal suite. The staff even ignored and turned her back on her!

6. Rude housekeeping - Male staff

During the tea ceremony, a male housekeeping staff came up to deliver some fruits. When the bridesmaids told him that he can't enter due to the tea ceremony, he gave attitude to them and even asked them rudely 'THEN HOW?!'. Wow. just wow. Didn't know my bridesmaids had to deal with this kinda attitude till they told me later during lunch.

7. Rude housekeeping - Female staff

This I encountered personally. The lady was about to deliver champagne (nice gesture though!) and we had just completed the morning ceremony. We were going down for lunch so I asked if she could deliver it later. She was very exasperated and asked frustratedly why can't she just deliver it there and then. (eh, cos the champagne won't be cold?). Super rude attitude.

After this, I immediately asked to talk to my coordinator, the front office manager (which surprisingly turned out to be my hospitality junior back in poly) and the manager in-charge that day. I raised all the concerns I had and the bad service I faced that day (didn't bring up the previous unhappiness lah. only the day itself). I spoke very plainly and directly that I didn't appreciate the service I had encountered so far.

They assured me that they would rectify that. For the dinner portion, I have to admit, things went well. (there were feedback that service was slow at the tables and refills took a while but that's pretty common at weddings I felt).

I would recommend all couples to voice out should they feel unsatisfied. Pro-tip by one of my bridesmaids Carrie. She mentioned to voice out so that they can rectify instead of keeping quiet and voicing it out at the end of the wedding where nothing can be done.

All in all, would I still have my wedding at Orchard Hotel if I had a second chance?

I am not so sure. We had chosen Orchard Hotel cos of the food. The food was good in our opinion and so far most feedback from our guests also indicated so. However, the hiccups and the bad service just made it unsatisfactory especially the rude service staff. Hopefully it was only because they had many weddings that day and the hotel staff were frazzled.

I did enjoy my wedding dinner however I am not so sure if I would recommend the hotel anymore.

Well, this is my honest review of my wedding dinner at Orchard Hotel. Hopefully my case is just one in a million!
