There is a reason why I gained so much weight from the honeymoon. Skai aka c(hubby) and I indulged during our honeymoon. We did not fuss over our calories (nor our expenses hahaha!). We're not that sort of couple that worries over every single thing like expenses, calories etc.

What is the point of a honeymoon if you are going to stress over everything single thing? And after all, it's AFTER the wedding! Time to indulge! Stress so much for what? We didn't wanted to regret not doing things during our honeymoon so we ate all we wanted! :p

ANYWAY! This is kinda like a food diary! Things we tried in Florence, Italy! There will be some meals that deserves an entry on their own but I'll get to that later.

These are just some of the things we tried in Florence! We liked some of them so much that we went back multiple times! Florence was also the longest leg during our trip!

Hotel breakfasts

I used to skip hotel breakfasts overseas till I went to Hotel Leonardo Da Vinci. I liked their breakfast selection plus the cosy corner with lovely sunlight was beautiful.

My breakfast varies but mainly consisted of a mixture of the following:

  • Yoghurt
  • Bread. It could be a buttered toast, a sugary croissant, plain croissant etc
  • Cereal with milk
  • Ham and cheese
  • Assortment of jams
  • Chocolate or hazelnut spread
  • Cheese spread
  • Juice
  • Hot chocolate
  • Fruits
  • Hard boiled eggs

Beef

The hubby is a huge fan of beef and needless to say, we steak it out.

IMG_1017

This deserves an entry on it's own. Do look out for my future blog post about the Florentine Steak!

IMG_0514

We also tried beef carpaccio. Super yummy!

Pizza

IMG_0524

We loved the pizza in Amsterdam, so needless to say, we HAD to try the pizza in Italy! Needless to say, it didn't disappoint!

Pasta

IMG_0877

IMG_0879

IMG_1010

IMG_1086

IMG_1120

CARBO OVERLOAD! How can one NOT eat pasta in Italy? The italians are well known for their pasta skills so needless to say, we tried LOADS of pasta of all sorts! Cream, Tomato based, Aglio Olio, Linguine, Spaghetti, Ravioli etc. We tried EVERYTHING!

Best.pasta.ever.

Risotto

IMG_1087

IMG_1117

IMG_0530

Again, we tried loads of risotto. Unfortunately not all were good unlike the pasta we had. After a few disappointing tries, we stuck to pasta.

Parma Ham

IMG_1007

We tried a few in some restaurants. Super delicious! Juicy and sweet melon with parma ham can't go wrong. Argh. Craving for it now!

Gelato

IMG_1037

IMG_1140

IMG_0537

I mentioned that we were addicted to the Nocciola / Hazelnut gelato back in Venice. In Florence, I was hooked to the Pineapple / Ananas gelato. Super refreshing!

However, we got "scammed". Will blog in detail over the "scams" that we encountered :/

Sandwiches

IMG_0383

Sandwiches were pretty common in any place of the world la. We did buy a few sandwiches but later stuck to more pastas.

I guess if you'll like to cut down on your eating expenses, you could dapao sandwiches instead? This way, you'll save the 'cover charge' imposed in cafes and restaurants.

Cheese and Meat Platters

IMG_0391

As mentioned in my previous entry, we tried cheese platters and meat platters. Super delicious! Highly recommended to try at least once during your trip!

Wine

IMG_0874

IMG_0884

Wine is cheaper than water or soda just like I mentioned in Venice. Skip those and drink wine instead!

I'm glad that Skai and I are such huge foodies! It's also great that we have the same tastes! He's definitely my food soulmate :p

I'll soon be blogging about Florence's other attractions in my other Thursday's Travels entries! If you have any questions, please feel free to comment in this entry. I will be blogging about the things to do in Florence soon! We visited Factory outlets, the statue of David, the Leaning Tower of Pisa etc! Do check it out soon!

You've probably read the previous blog post about how Venice captured my heart, here is the continuation including the pictures of gorgeous Venice at night!

When in Venice, you MUST try the Nocciola (Hazelnut) gelato. It is extremely delicious and somehow or rather, Singapore's gelato does not taste the same. Might be the air or something.

IMG_0109

When in Venice, try things like pizza. The italians are amazing with their pizza.

IMG_0100

When in Venice, substitute water for wine. Because wine is cheaper. Look at the pictures below. Wine is served in this plastic jug in a restaurant I went! Water and/or soft drinks are more expensive. I am not a wine person but the whole trip, I was whacking wine.

IMG_0175

IMG_0176

When in Venice, do buy a mask as it's apparently the signature item there. Do look around for the best deals because seriously, a pushcart and a store could be selling the same item but at huge differences.

When in Venice, try the squid ink risotto.

IMG_0182

When in Venice, opt for a seat outdoors. It is extremely calming and relaxing watching people. Or it could be the copious amount of wine that made me feel happy.

IMG_0188

When in Venice, do take the ferry to nearby islands. Burano was amazing.

IMG_0151

When in Venice, do take the time to visit the stores and also the night markets. You might actually find a good deal or two.

IMGP2332

IMGP2397

When in Venice, DO NOT get tricked into trying set meals that seems too good to be true. Especially if you have a waiter who is extremely pesky and persuasive AND can speak various languages. These places are usually for tourists and you'll be eating cardboard fish, just like we did.

IMG_0264

When in Venice, squeeze on the bridge to take pictures. You won't regret it. Please also remember to take care of your belongings.

IMGP2401

And these are the pictures of Venice at night, as promised.

I would definitely wanna revisit Venezia again in future! I hope you've enjoyed this photolog of Venice by night!

The most beautiful stop during our honeymoon wasn't Paris in my humble opinion. It was Venice. It was just breathtakingly beautiful. It's been said that Venice is sinking. 🙁 It's sad that this beautiful place is sinking more everyday. If you're travelling to Europe, I would highly recommend visiting Venice!

For our Venice leg, we stayed at Quality Hotel Delfino Venezia Mestre which costs us SGD$330.47 for 2 nights. Hotel wasn't spectacular, rooms were dull and simple but they sufficed. Location wasn't ideal though. We got lost looking for the hotel. :/ We also had to take a bus to the main city which costed us EUR18 and we could continue to take other buses for  12hrs.

The weather during our trip.

IMG_0037

Protip: Try to book hotels with breakfast so that you can load up. Food is expensive in Europe and we rather whack the buffet breakfast, have some snacks / dessert for lunch and a very good dinner.

Outfit of the day: 1314!

Remember my previous entry about Halia with Fidelis? This time I returned with Esther for an invited tasting to try out their Communal Feast Dishes.

IMG_5956

IMG_5976
A quick Outfit of the day :p

This time, instead of the high tea that I was used to, we had a very different experience.

The communal feast, which we experienced, is served with a number of dishes in the centre of the table where everyone could help themselves to the food. Kinda like how you'll eat at home and when mama whips up a whole bunch of dishes. Well, something like that. Not the usual restaurant style of serving an individual dish per person.

IMG_5892

They even had specially designed oversized mats with multilingual renditions on the word ‘delicious’ as well as colourful, tongue-in- cheek artwork impart much vibrancy. I love the porcelain crockery sporting the familiar “rooster” motif, grandma’s aluminium kettles as well as old-school metal tins for the cutlery. Super #throwback!

These are some of the dishes that we sampled!

IMG_5893Chef's Soup which was Cream of Cauliflower.

IMG_5895
Goats' Cheese Mousse

IMG_5898
Oriental pulled duck, Gherkin, caper, micro herb salad, soba noodle, sesame oil

IMG_5907
House smoked salmon pate, Hendrick's gin, crostini, cucumber

IMG_5909
Chilli crab dip, toasted baguette

IMG_5919
Baked kingfish collar, pickled vegetable miso, orange, ginger

IMG_5915
"Zhajiangmian", Iberico chorizo, oyster sauce, carrot, bean sprout, spring onion

IMG_5921
Twice-cooked spatchcock of spring chicken, spiced cabbage slaw, paprika, mesquite

IMG_5935
Mayura Station Full Blood MBS 9+ 'Gunpowder' Wagyu Rump Cap, spring onion mash, pepper sauce

IMG_5945
Coconut parfait, pineapple, gingerflower, chocolate

IMG_5946
Sticky toffee pudding, date, butterscotch sauce, sea salt, vanilla ice cream

My personal favourites would have to be the Goats' Cheese Mousse which was served with a salad of heirloom tomatoes, dehydrated olive and dried brioche with wild honey which was extremely delightful. The combination of Goats' Cheese and wild honey helped to tone down the cheese which could get a bit overpowering for some!

Truth to be told, I wasn't a fan of the House Smoked Salmon Pate comprises salmon infused with Hendrick’s gin smoked with wood chips as I felt that it was a bit.. well, fishy for me.

Esther really relished the Twice-Cooked Spatchcock of Spring Chicken as it was not only tender but extremely juicy!

But my number one favourite dish was the “Gunpowder” Wagyu Rump (Mayura Station Signature Series 9+) which was marinated for 6 hours with ‘gunpowder’ seasoning of charcoal and nitrate salt for that added smoky flavour dimension before it is sous vide and finished on the grill. Wagyu beef. Need I say more?

I love the whole idea of a communal dining experience as it's a great way to share food that you like or do not like. For example, Esther can't eat beef for religious reasons and I'm not a huge fan of fish so we made a great pair as we tackled the dishes that we really enjoyed!

The Communal Feast Menu serves four persons and is available in ‘light’ ($160++) & ‘hearty’ ($270++) versions. Both sets include a non-alcoholic communal jug.

Both menus are available during these timings:
12pm - 10.30pm (last order 9.30pm) from Monday to Friday; 2pm – 11pm (last order 10pm) on Saturday;
2pm – 10.30pm (last order 9.30pm) on Sunday & Public Holiday.

Check out The Halia at Raffles Hotel if you'll like to try out the Communal menu!
