MJ’s first anniversary!

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

It’s been a great year with MJ! Not only have we seen MJ grow from our first flagship store in Watsons NAC to 44 stores in Singapore, they have also launched 24 lovely chapters!

For their anniversary, MJ has come out with some really cute dollhouses at Watsons NAC. They first made their debut at the Cozycot Holygrail party but it has now shifted to NAC.

Vote for your favourite chapter and you’ll get a limited edition handphone charm!

Here are a few sneak previews of the dollhouses!

From 30th Sept till 14th Oct, Chapter 20, 21, 22 and 23 will be showcased and from 15th Oct till 2nd Nov, Chapter 8, 11, 15 and 16 will be on display!

The chapters displayed are our best-selling chapters and the dollhouses will showcase the elements of the chapter plus the products launched!

My favourite would have to be Chapter 23!

After viewing the dollhouses, we went to Pasta Cafe to have dinner, also to mourn Jerraine’s leaving us! She has left to pursue other opportunities. Here’s wishing her all the best! <3

I had the steak… which was very disappointing.

Anyway…  the MJ girls gave us ambassadors a very nice door gift!

It’s a lovely limited edition exclusive MJ dresser..

And it includes 4 of MJ’s best sellers!

We had a great time as per every MJ meeting! More updates coming soon!

A case of discrimination or just bad service?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Interestingly enough, this happened right after I posted the Are you being served entry.

As some of you guys may know, I had my convocation ceremony on Sunday. On Saturday, I met up with some of my classmates to collect our tickets to the ceremony to be held at Raffles Convention Centre. So.. after collecting our tickets, we decided to get some drinks (for them), snacks (for me) at Mos Burger (Raffles City branch) for a brief catch up.

The girls ordered large drinks while I ordered a croquette to snack on. We were there barely 15 minutes when the manager, Hong Chong came up to us and asked us if we could give up our seats. While I had finished my croquette, the girls hadn’t finished their drinks!

In fact, they had only drank less than half of their drinks! I looked behind and I saw this family of 4 occupying a booth seat and they weren’t consuming ANY Mos Burger products at all! One of the guys was reading newspapers and another was surfing on his laptop. They weren’t asked to leave, or give up their seats at all. There was an empty table at the other end!

Why wasn’t the family asked to give up their seats? My classmates were wondering if it was due to the fact we looked like teenagers with our weekend clothes. It wasn’t as if we were hogging the seats for hours! We were only there for 15 minutes!

I wanted to stomp right to the manager and ask what the heck was going on but he had disappeared, maybe to the kitchen or some other back-end operations. Waited for a while, he didn’t appear and so we left as we all had other commitments lined up.

I don’t know about you but I was extremely disappointed and irked by the service. I doubt even food court “aunties” would ask anyone to leave/give up their seats.

Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Are you being served?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

I think you guys would have probably heard about the Are you being served website from Krisandro, Claudia, Molemole, Lesterchan or Hpility… Here’s my turn to go on a mission!

Friends would know that I could be the best or the worst customer ever. I am very particular about service standards. If the service is good, I’ll be sure to compliment the servers/write a good review/sometimes even email the restaurant complementing the service and the staff involved.

But when the service is bad, I’ll be sure to complain. I’m never one to mince my words. For this mission, I was thinking of visiting a semi buffet restaurant with a bunch of friends. I’ll definitely take note of how the service is like, especially during peak periods, whether they’ll be able to keep their cool while busy. Aside from that, I’ll be able the servers some questions about the type of dishes they’ll recommend I order. Basically it’ll be a test of product knowledge and professionalism.

Let’s see how it goes! Any suggestions to what else I should do?

For pouty lips, remember to use lipgloss!

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

I think lipgloss makes a world of a difference. Without gloss, my lips are horribly dry, chapped and unattractive. With a touch of gloss, I feel that my lips seem softer and more voluminous!

I for one, prefer to use lipgloss over lipstick. I find that lipsticks are really dry and coupled with the fact that my lips are dry to begin with, it doesn’t really help the condition of my lips!

MJ has recently announced the arrival of 2 lovely products and they are…. *drumrolls*

Honey Pump Gloss Neo and Honey Pump Lip Essence!

The Honey Pump Lip Essence is a new addition to the MJ Team!

It’s really good for people with super dry lips like mine as it contains Acacia honey, Royal jelly extract, Beeswax and DPG. Not only that, it really spreads effortlessly, isn’t greasy or sticky imho. It’s texture is a bit more sticky as compared to Majex.

But it’s like comparing an apple to an orange! One is an essence while the other is a lip balm. It really depends on what you prefer..

But if you were to compare, I’ll definitely prefer the Honey Pump Gloss Neo as I like its voluminising effect!

Honey Pump Gloss Neo is actually an enhanced version of Honey Pump Gloss.

What’s the difference, I hear you ask? This lovely version gives you even more moisture as it contains royal honey EX. Not only that, because of its rich formulation with high viscosity lipid, it creates a voluminous effect on your lips! The honeydew gloss smells really yummy too!

I played around with both Honey Pump Lip Essence and Honey Pump Gloss Neo and I think that you can use these 2 together or on its own. My personal recommendation would be to apply Honey Pump Lip Essence before applying Honey Pump Gloss Neo.Which is the effect you see in the picture of my lips above.

Have you girls tried it? Let me know which do you prefer!

If you like sushi, please stand up!

[review]

Being an avid user of social media, needless to say I’m always surfing blogs, twitter, plurk, forums and other social media tools. There’s where I would usually looking for good places to eat and all.

When I first saw a few tweets on this place called Standing Sushi Bar, I was a bit intrigued. Friends who know me would know that my 2 favourite foods would have to be sashimi and steak.

This owner of Standing Sushi Bar was answering queries, making conversation, talking about his food all on Twitter! This was one of the few places I knew who would do so.

I decided to give it a test by making reservations on Twitter and made arrangements to go.

The whole concept of Standing Sushi Bar is basically to stand and eat but being lazy people, Gracey and I chose to sit. (Chairs are only provided during dinner time.)

We ordered an assortment of sashimi, sushi and some other snacks and it was really yummy!

Howard, the owner of Standing Sushi Bar kept plying Gracey and I mad amounts of sake.

Had way too many.

Howard and Chef Roy smiled gamely for my camera.

I am no food blogger or food connoisseur but I do think that Standing Sushi Bar serves really fresh sashimi. Food is good, service is good however… the food might be a bit expensive for those on a budget compared to other sushi joints.

In which case, I would advice you to try omakase.

From Wikipedia:

Omakase (????) is a Japanese phrase that means “It’s up to you” (from Japanese ??, entrust).

The expression is used at sushi restaurants to leave the selection to the chef. It differs from ordering à la carte. The chef will generally present a series of plates, beginning with the lightest fare and proceeding to heaviest, richest dishes. The phrase is not exclusive to service of raw fish with rice, and can incorporate grilling and simmering as well. Customers ordering omakase style expect the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes, and the meal can be likened to an artistic performance by the chef. Ordering omakase can be a gamble; however, the customer typically receives the highest quality fish the restaurant currently has in stock at a price cheaper than if it was ordered à la carte. From the restaurant’s perspective, a large number of customers ordering omakase can help in planning for food costs.

Howard told us about the concept of omakase and Gracey and I decided to come back together with her friend Celeste and my friend David to try the omakase.

We waited in anticipation (and a bit of fear). We had set a budget of $70/pax (you have to set a budget, it goes at a minimum of $50/pax) and we were really excited about the food.

Guess who was beside us?

Stephie and Mr Stephie! If you find that (side profile of) Stephie looked familiar, that’s because she was one of the Blogathon participants and she writes the fantastic fashion blog Fashion Nation!

The food soon arrived.

1st course: Sliced beef.

I found this really yummy and tasty. A nice appetiser.

2nd course: Salmon, the soft bone bits.

I’m not a big fan of salmon and honestly this dish didn’t do it for me. However, I gamely ate more than half of it.

3rd course: Assorted sashimi

Needless to say, this was our favourite course. There was even scallop! Really yummy and really good!

4th course: hamachi.

Usually I’m not a big fan of fish but this dish was really delish. There was no strong fishy aftertaste (which I really detest). Much nicer than salmon imho.

5th course: oysters.

If I remembered correctly, there was a cheesy sauce on it. Interesting dish!

6th course: Seafood + brinjal

Extremely sinful but extremely yummy! The sauce on this dish was really tasty! Wonder if I get the recipe from Chef Roy… hmmm

Miso Soup was served after the 6th course and I mistook it as the 7th course. Oops.

7th course: assorted sushi

I think it was salmon, scallop and unagi. Reallly goood! Check out the huge unagi piece!

8th course: Icecream

The final course was a scoop of delish black sesame icecream. Totally hit the spot!

We really enjoyed ourselves and I returned for another omakase trip with some other blogger friends the week after. In fact, I’m heading back tomorrow! Go for the omakase, I’m absolutely hooked to it. Great value for money! ;)

Taking my basic theory this week.

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

For ages, I never saw the need to have a car license. Until I started dating Ching Chong Boy..  I started getting more interested in bikes and cars, and really see the convenience of owning your vehicle.

While I do think that it’s not feasible to own your own car in Singapore unless you are sharing it with your family, I am still very keen to get my own car license thus I have taken the first step.

By going for my Basic Theory Test this week. Just opened the Highway code book that Nick has sweetly lent me and I was shocked. SO many things to memorise! Jia lat le!

After that, it’ll be the next step. I’ve been asking friends for opinions over whether I should go for School or Private and to be honest, I’m leaning towards Private (though CCB seriously thinks I should go for School.)

Any recommendations for instructors? I’ll be taking my lessons at Ubi. Must be english speaking, friendly and preferably not ancient that he’ll fall asleep when I’m driving.

Any tips for BTT, ATT or instructors or lessons or anything would be great!

Thanks guys!
